Vince’s intimate paintings depict the familiar, lyrical landscapes, portraits, warriors; but the ongoing narratives reflect deeper themes of the position of self.
Vince’s rigorous approach to surface, texture and colour, is one of deliberately executed fat on thin paint, exploring impasto to thin glazes applied to canvas, hard board, even 3d objects at a range of scales from the tiny to the massive.
What the paintings have in common is an intense dynamic restlessness, an almost suspended sense of watching from elsewhere. The paintings whilst being depictions, always include evocative elements that suggest something lurking in the background - in the trees or in the mind behind the eyes of the subject. In this the paintings are as much of themselves as they are of the artist. The viewer gets a private view to the artist’s personal emotional state. The worlds depicted are personal – where the artist and the subject are alone. Paintings range from the serene and uplifting to the sinister and intense dark and lost visions.
Influences of style range from Turner, Constable and the Impressionists to the more contemporary, Bacon and Tai Shan Schierenberg.
Through the layering of paint and opacity, Vince expresses a personal reaction to the subject, which is often illusive. Bold colours are sometimes used sparingly for instance as a background to a portrait, but the subject seems lost in a haze with moments of sharp clarity and detail.
Recent works include x-ray paintings where the subjects are almost absorbed by their surroundings with disappearing layers of form absorbed by the paint. Vince’s paintings are between worldly and otherworldly, the sublime and the familiar.
